Every spring bird-watchers from around the country come to Kansas to get a glimpse of the greater prairie chicken. Once abundant, the prairie chicken has become extremely rare. These hardy birds are native to the grasslands of the open plains. They are known for the unique mating dance that the males perform to attract the females in the spring.

The males gather in an area with shorter grass called a lek, where they stomp their feet, raise the feathers on their heads, and fill the air sacks on their necks to make loud booming sounds.

Prairie chickens do not migrate. They survive winter storms by diving into the snow and living in the grass beneath the wintry blanket.

To count to 12, we catch a glance at the little birds who seem to dance.

Round they go, cute as the dickens.

I count TWELVE prairie chickens.
